Hi All

You will have seen the attached FSA/FSS Consultation (see:

 http://www.food.gov.uk/news-updates/help-shape-our-policies/adulteration-of-food) and attached document.

I am a little confused now between the relative roles of Defra (which is not mentioned in the Consultation) and the FSA.

It would seem that this Consultation will give the responsibility for identifying the incident to the FSA and setting threshold levels with, presumably, methodology development to Defra (through the Authenticity Methodology Working Group) and then the final control at LA level back to FSA.

I would find it helpful if one of the Defra or FSA members of this Network could tell us know if this is how the system will work in future.

I worked in the FSA for a year or two a little while back and the concern then was for government to be "joined-up".  I am not sure that such switching of responsibilities is helpful - but then I might have completely misread the situation.

 Happy Easter!

 Roger

  • Hi Roger,
AMWG minutes are confidential because we discuss on-going research projects but once final project reports and methods have been approved by Defra and the AMWG, they are published on the Defra website and are now being loaded onto the Food Authenticity Network.
    Kind regards

  • Hi Selvarani

Thank you, but all the website entries refer only to Defra, e.g.:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_dat...

Yes, the FSA is listed as a member but I cannot find any public information that it is a co-owner.

Are the minutes freely available or does one have to ask Defra for them please? If freely available, then should go on the Authenticity Network Web-site - or are they there and I have not yet found them?

    Best wishes

    Roger
  • Hello Roger,

The Authenticity Methods Working Group has been a joint Defra - FSA group for the last ~three years.

    Kind regards
