International Year of the Periodic Table, 2019: Celebrating the Periodic Table and Atomic Spectroscopy

4th November 2019, Burlington House, London, W1J 0BA

This year has been designated by UNESCO as the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT), marking the 150th anniversary of the Mendeleev periodic table. For the Atomic Spectroscopy community, the periodic table represents our analytical world and understanding the fundamentals of the elements has allowed the development of this large and varied field. To celebrate this, the Atomic Spectroscopy Group is holding a special symposium at Burlington House with keynote speakers covering the breadth of the atomic spectroscopy and an informal drinks reception, providing an opportunity for networking in a relaxed environment. We are also pleased to announce the RSC IYPT Periodic Table Photo Booth will be at the event!

Agenda (13.00-17.00)

Keynote: Prof. Frank Vanhaecke, University of Ghent.
"High-precision isotopic analysis of essential mineral elements in human health & disease"

Prof Vanhaecke leads the ‘Atomic & Mass Spectrometry’ research group which focuses on the determination, speciation and isotopic analysis of elements using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The group studies fundamentally-oriented aspects of the technique and develops methods for solving challenging scientific problems covering a multitude of interdisciplinary applications.

Sally Spankie, IOM Edinburgh
"Challenges of undertaking an European wide biomonitoring measurement campaign for metals"

Lizzie Griffin, University of Aberdeen
"The Periodic Table of Alzheimer's: Using Atomic Spectroscopy to Study Disease Models"

Sarah Hill, LGC
"Potatoes, Milk and Breast Implants: The Story of Iodine and Atomic Spectroscopy"

Further talks will be announced shortly.

Following the seminar, a drinks reception will be held to enable a chance to mix with the speakers, meet new people and claim your element at the IYPT photo booth!
