The rise of "Generic" GMOs?

Patents on some existing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are close to expiry, and other producers are beginning to market off-patent alternatives at lower prices. Some of these are “generic GMOs”—off-patent seeds that cost half as much and which farmers are free to save and replant. But the leading companies are developing and marketing improved varieties to keep ahead of the patents.
