The Treasury has given the FSA an extra £14million on top of the original budget of £89million for 20018/19. The extra money is to support the priorities of the FSA to ensure a high standard of food safety and consumer protection after Brexit. It is also to fund Phase 2 of the NFCU (National Food Crime Unit), which will build up the investigative capabalities of the Unit. Phase 2 is hoped to be operational by 1 April 2019.

  • Hi,

I am wondering, What do they mean by "preparations for Brexit"? "Taking back control" of the food law, change of regulations?

Why don't they give the £14 million to..."fund our NHS instead" ?

    Kind regards

    • Savvas,

I do not think that £14million would go very far in the overall NHS budget. However, I have just put an article about the closure of the PA funtion at WYAS, which shows a public analyst service in England almost in crisis. If the money for FSA is to put the NFCU in a more investigative function, then it needs a good official control analytical service to be effective. Duncan Campbell, the PA at WYAS thinks that the FSA should be asking for extra money to save the PA service in England.

I totally agree that that a good official control analytical service is more necessary. It is sad to notice that for some EFSA reports, the UK submits fewer analytical results than Cyprus or Malta!

      Kind regards
