  • Someone might rightly argue that a country who is a member of the EU for 40 years is different to a country which is not even in Europe (e.g South Africa) and should find ways to guarantee the protected status of the food products basically for its own benefit. Brexit is an arrogant decision in itself anyway so treating things like this with a touch of arrogance by the other side  is expected. Especially if you need to convince 27 countries to agree on the new rules.

  • Maybe we should ask the Italians (tomatoes?!) how to handle this...

But I'd agree that the Commission's view is a touch arrogant. Are they expecting every non-EU country to automatically register GIs in future? I doubt it.

  • Hi All

At last, an interesting discussion in the Network!  However anti-Brexit one may be, the attitude of the original piece was annoying.  And presumably all the existing PDOs will have to be re-negotiated by Defra on behalf of the UK (cannot just assume that they will apply?).

  • The attitude of the UK  up to now, is so ridiculously wrong that some would want to "take back control" even of the..... pastry of the pork pies.

There are 6 examples of Agreements of this type: between the EU and Australia (wine, 1994) (but not cheese), Canada (wine and spirits, 2003), Chile, (wine and spirits, 2002), Colombia (2007, coffee) Mexico (1997, spirit drinks), and South Africa (2002, wine and spirits).

  • There are plenty of examples of non-EU countries applying to have their products GI protected in the EU. The UK has 28 PDOs, 45PGIs, and 6 TSGs registered in the EU, which will have protection in EU Member States after Brexit. The Commission are seeking a sort of mutual recognition from the UK, where even when we are not in the EU we would still continue the protection of registered GIs.

  • Why would the UK let the European Bureaucrats to decide if Melton Mowbray pork pie should be produced under specific methods and in a specific Geographical region? UK should start a new scheme and "take back control" of the... pork pies.

  • Hi

Presumably this will be a reciprocal process - though it is noticeable that the article does not actually say that!  It is this attitude which is to be regretted.
